Getting to Akagera National Park for a safari starts upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport which is the major entry point into Rwanda. Kigali International Airport is served by many airlines including RwandAir-the national carrier for Rwanda, Ethiopian airlines, Air Burundi, SN Brussels, Kenya Airways to mention but a few. Kigali International Airport is approximately 10 kilometers from Kigali central business area and it serves as the major point where visitors’ begin their journeys to Akagera National Park.

Driving in to Agakera National Park by Car

Akagera National Park can be reached by road, set suitably in the extreme northeastern side of Rwanda; 110 kilometers off Kigali International Airport that is approximately 2 and half hours’ drive in a good and comfortable 4 wheel drive safari vehicle. Akagera National Park is by far a magical destination in northeastern Rwanda just at border with Tanzania and remarkably the only savanna national park in this landlocked country. The park has a complete list of the big five game in habitat-African elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards, buffaloes as well as other wildlife including over 550 birds species, giraffes, roan antelopes, elands, zebras, oribis, kobs, hippos, crocodiles to mention but a few.

The best way in  accessing Akagera is best done by a safari vehicle. The routes to northeastern Rwanda to Akagera are good according to East African standards although you will find some bumpy spots on the way. You need a good and comfortable 4 wheel drive safari car to enable you have a perfect trip this amazing wildlife park smoothly regardless of the season. Helicopter flights to Akagera can also be arranged on request and this gives the easiest access to the park within 25 minutes

Directions to take park

After landing at Kigali International Airport, you can take a helicopter charter flight or use a contracted tour operator in Rwanda with a driver guide that will pick you up and you start your journey to the park. From Kigali capital city, drive out of town towards the airport and prior reaching Kigali Airport, approximately 100 meters out, turn left and head off to east towards Rwamagana.

From Rwamagana drive towards Kayonza where you turn to your right at the roundabout and continue until you find a Discentre station on the left side of the road as you approach to Kabarondo Town.  Immediately after the petrol station, drive to the left for about 15 kilometres until you reach a junction at Rwinkwavu where you will see a signpost for Akagera National Park on the left. Akagera National Park gates are 13 kilometres’ drive away following the signpost. Accessing Akagera National Park in Rwanda remain the most easiest way even on a self-drive tour.
